You may enjoy walking but want to save energy for Punta Laguna. You may have no interest in cycling at all. Start with the route, the stops and the amount of walking involved, rather than assuming everyone in your party should travel the same way.

This guide separates three decisions: how to move around the archaeological site, how to make time for the visit itself and whether an ascent of Nohoch Mul could fit your plans. Each needs its own answer.

Which option fits your visit?

Consider your confidence on a bicycle, the walking you want to do across the whole day and the time you would like for explanations and breaks. There is no single best choice for every visitor.

Walking: discuss the route and return journey first. This suits a plan that allows enough time for moving between stops without rushing the visit.

Cycling: choose it because you are comfortable starting, braking and getting off regularly. Allow time to stop and explore, rather than treating the visit as a continuous bike ride.

A driver-operated pedal tricycle: ask about this if you prefer not to pedal. Clarify where it takes you, where you get off and which parts still involve walking.

A seated ride alone does not establish that a route is accessible. If boarding, getting out or walking over uneven ground could be difficult, explain the specific movements you need help with before booking. Ask for practical details rather than relying on a general description such as “suitable for everyone”.

Plan the stops as well as the journey

The INAH visitor map identifies several areas, including the Coba group, Xaibe and the Nohoch Mul group. Discuss the proposed circuit with your guide or at the entrance and choose your priorities. Adding another area without reconsidering the schedule can squeeze the time available elsewhere.

Build your plan around three separate blocks: travelling between areas, looking at the monuments and returning to the exit. A bicycle or tricycle does not replace time spent listening to an explanation, looking closely at a carved stone or taking a break. A quoted riding time is therefore a poor substitute for a complete visit schedule.

Xaibe at Coba, photographed in 2017. Tell the team your preference when arranging the day and have it included in your confirmed plan.

That inclusion belongs to this tour. If you travel independently, check the on-site hire price, what it covers, how the return works and whether waiting time is included. Do not assume an operator’s package inclusion also applies to a separate rental.

For a private group, describe the changes you would actually like: more time for explanations, a shorter walking section or a visit without cycling. The team must confirm what is possible within the full itinerary and whether any change affects the price. A private booking does not automatically include every requested adjustment.

Check Nohoch Mul separately

INAH announced the opening of a new staircase at Nohoch Mul on 7 December 2025. Older advice stating that climbing is permanently closed is therefore out of date. Check the current INAH page for Coba and the instructions at the entrance for the conditions that apply when you visit.

Access allowed by the site manager does not establish that an ascent is part of your tour. If climbing matters to you, ask whether the schedule allows for it, how a queue would affect the visit and where anyone staying below would meet the group. Keep the rest of your visit worthwhile even if that activity cannot go ahead.

Different preferences within one group

Make the decision person by person. An enthusiastic cyclist and someone who prefers a tricycle may want exactly the same archaeological experience. Ask how the guide will organise the stops and meeting points, rather than assuming separate guiding is provided.

If you are travelling with children, share their ages and ask which equipment is available. Do not assume there will be a child seat, a suitably sized bicycle or a particular tricycle seating arrangement. Confirm the practical setup and participation rules before choosing.

Think beyond Coba, too. A combined day also includes time on foot at Punta Laguna. If you want to limit exertion, describe what works for you in everyday terms. “I would rather avoid cycling and need regular sitting breaks” gives the team more to work with than “Is the tour easy?”

Your pre-departure checklist

Confirm the transport option and which sections remain on foot.

Ask about stops, the return point and the time allocated to Coba.

Describe individual needs and confirm any equipment arrangements.

Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes and plan for drinking water and sun protection.

Check Nohoch Mul access separately if you would like to climb.

Read your booking’s inclusions and conditions instead of relying on prices in an old trip report.

Common questions

Do I have to ride a bicycle?

No. The English-speaking private VivaOhlala itinerary lists a tricycle alternative at no extra charge. Tell the team before the day so your preference forms part of the agreed arrangements.

Can our group walk the whole route?

Ask whether the proposed circuit and schedule allow for it. In a combined itinerary, the choice also affects how much time remains for the other stops.

Does a tricycle mean there is no walking?

Do not assume so. Check boarding and drop-off points, movements around the monuments and what getting into the vehicle involves.

Still choosing your archaeological site? When you are ready to plan Coba, view the English-speaking private itinerary and send the team your date, accommodation and transport preferences.

Sources for planning your visit

INAH: opening of the Nohoch Mul staircase, 7 December 2025.
