VIVAOHLALA TRAVEL GUIDE

Plan how you will pay before you need cash for an excursion, taxi or small purchase. Compare the total pesos you receive and the fees involved, rather than assuming a single exchange counter always offers the best deal.

Money in Playa del Carmen: Pesos, Cards & Exchange Tips

Keep the payment currency clear

When a price is shown in dollars, ask whether the final payment is charged in USD or MXN. Those are different questions. A rounded USD estimate on a tour page is useful for planning, but the confirmed booking tells you what currency to pay.

For VivaOhlala, the remaining tour balance is payable in cash in MXN to the guide according to your booking confirmation. Check the amount in advance and bring the exact balance.

Compare the full exchange quote

Ask how many pesos you will receive for the dollars you hand over, including any commission. Compare that final amount instead of relying only on an advertised rate.

Banco de Mexico publishes a reference exchange rate, but a retail exchange quote is not necessarily the same. Rates change; a recommendation based on an old holiday visit cannot guarantee today’s best rate.

Read card and ATM screens before accepting

Check the withdrawal fee, your own bank’s foreign-use charges and any currency-conversion offer displayed on the screen. Compare the terms rather than accepting an offer automatically.

Use a machine in a setting where you feel comfortable completing the transaction. Keep cards and cash organized, save receipts when needed and check the transaction amount before leaving.

Carry practical amounts and useful notes

Think about the payments you actually expect: your confirmed excursion balance, transport, small purchases and optional tips. Smaller denominations make everyday payments easier, especially when a vendor may not have change.

Avoid putting all of your cards and cash in one place. For a boat excursion, follow the packing list and protect money and your phone from water.

Prepare your excursion payment

Review the deposit and outstanding balance with the team before departure. If you receive a payment QR code, scan it with your phone’s camera and follow the secure payment instructions provided for your reservation.

Ask us to clarify any discrepancy before you pay. Do not infer a private-group total from a “from” price that applies to a larger party.

Plan your day with a local team

VivaOhlala is based in Playa del Carmen and offers private Riviera Maya tours with English-speaking guides. Send your dates, hotel, group size and the experiences you prefer. We’ll help you compare the actual programs and confirm pickup, pricing and participation requirements.
