Practical travel tips for the Riviera Maya
A smoother vacation starts with the details: how you will reach your accommodation, pay for your day trips and stay in touch. Use these planning checks between your excursions.
Arrival & getting around
Airport to accommodation
Confirm your arrival airport, terminal, flight number, meeting instructions and exact destination with your transfer provider. Ask about luggage, child seats, delays and any extra stops before booking. Keep the contact instructions available on your phone.
Renting a car
Compare the complete agreement: insurance, deposit, fuel policy, mileage, collection and return arrangements. Check the final amount and required documents directly with the provider rather than assuming a headline rate covers everything.
Excursion pickup
Send us your actual hotel name or rental address. Pickup coverage and supplements vary by excursion; a supplement is quoted per group for the round trip, not per person.
Money, connectivity & daily essentials
Pesos and payments
Read our money guide for Playa del Carmen and confirm your booking balance before departure. Bring the exact MXN cash amount due to the guide, as shown in your confirmation.
Phone and internet
Check your carrier’s Mexico coverage, roaming terms and data allowance before traveling. If comparing a local SIM or eSIM, verify device compatibility, activation steps and what the plan includes. Save your pickup address and essential contacts offline.
Charging devices
Check the voltage and plug information printed on your own equipment and the facilities at your accommodation. An adapter changes the connection; it does not necessarily convert voltage.
Optional tips
Tips on our excursions are optional and not included in the tour price. If you choose to leave one, small cash denominations are useful. Check bills for any service charge before deciding on an additional tip.
Plan activities around your group
Share children’s ages, dietary needs, swimming confidence and mobility considerations before booking. Check the conditions for cenotes, snorkeling, boats and ziplining on the specific tour page.
For diving, buggy outings or other activities outside the published private-tour program, confirm the operator, itinerary, eligibility, equipment, transport and total price before making a commitment. Any partner benefit must be confirmed for the current offer.
Pack for the actual excursion
Walking shoes suit archaeological sites and jungle trails. A swimsuit, towel, UV shirt, hat and dry bag are useful for water-based days. Follow each tour’s sunscreen rules: some cenotes and marine areas prohibit sunscreen, including biodegradable products.
Do not assume that carrying a drone gives permission to fly it. See our drone preparation checklist and verify the relevant requirements before use.
