VIVAOHLALA TRAVEL GUIDE
Cozumel is the first island to compare for a snorkeling-focused day from Playa del Carmen. Holbox suits travelers drawn to sandy streets and island landscapes. Isla Mujeres combines sea time with an island visit from the Cancun area. The best choice depends on what you want to do, not simply which beach photograph you prefer.
Compare the complete journey
| Island | Mainland access to consider | Key question |
|---|---|---|
| Cozumel | Playa del Carmen | How much time is spent snorkeling? |
| Holbox | Chiquila | How much time is left to explore the island? |
| Isla Mujeres | Cancun area | How is time divided between the boat and shore? |
Transfers to the departure point, crossings and boat activities are separate parts of the day. A ferry arrival does not put you directly at a reef.
Choose Cozumel when snorkeling is the priority
Cozumel’s appeal is strongly connected to its marine setting. The French VivaOhlala excursion features reef and El Cielo experiences; ask the team about the English-language format, guide and rate available for your date.
If part of your group does not want to swim, check what they can do during the boat stops. A wonderful day for enthusiastic snorkelers may be less suitable for someone hoping mainly to explore streets, shops and cafes.
Choose Holbox for island scenery and a change of pace
Look closely at the road journey to Chiquila and the stops included on the boat route. Our private Holbox tour combines swimming, island scenery, lunch and free time, with access depending on local conditions.
A day trip gives you a taste of Holbox. If your main goal is a long, unstructured stay on an island beach, compare that with spending a night or more as part of your broader vacation.
Choose Isla Mujeres for a mix of sea and shore
Different Isla Mujeres tours can mean very different days: a crossing, a boat outing or substantial time on the island. Our private Isla Mujeres itinerary includes planned snorkeling, Playa Norte and time in town, subject to conditions.
From Playa del Carmen or farther south, include the drive toward Cancun when assessing the schedule. The island’s proximity to Cancun does not mean it is equally close to your hotel.
Traveling with children or non-swimmers
Ask about time on boats, boarding, flotation equipment and alternatives to snorkeling. Pool confidence is not the same as comfort in the open sea. Agree on how adults will supervise children who choose not to enter the water.
Choose the program with the right pace and activities. Avoid treating one entire island as universally best for every family; the details of the outing matter more.
Leave room for changing conditions
Navigation, visibility and beach access can change. Ask about modification, postponement and cancellation terms before paying. Wildlife sightings and a particular shade of turquoise cannot be guaranteed.
For a first island visit, choose one island per day. If you have two free days, combine contrasting experiences rather than spending most of your time transferring between locations.
Plan your day with a local team
VivaOhlala is based in Playa del Carmen and offers private Riviera Maya tours with English-speaking guides. Send your dates, hotel, group size and the experiences you prefer. We’ll help you compare the actual programs and confirm pickup, pricing and participation requirements.
