VIVAOHLALA TRAVEL GUIDE
A rewarding week in Playa del Carmen does not need an excursion every morning. Build it around three main discovery days, local time and room to rest. The sample below assumes seven usable days; if flights take up part of your week, remove an optional outing first.
Your week at a glance
- Day 1: settle in and explore near your accommodation
- Day 2: a Maya-history day such as Chichen Itza
- Day 3: beach, pool and a relaxed local walk
- Day 4: an island or snorkeling excursion
- Day 5: free time or one optional activity
- Day 6: Coba and Punta Laguna, or Sian Ka’an
- Day 7: an easy final day around your departure plans
These are suggested day numbers, not guaranteed departure dates. Confirm availability and adjust their order before you book.
Days 1–2: settle in, then discover Maya history
Keep arrival day simple. Find your way around the neighborhood, identify somewhere convenient for dinner and check the meeting arrangements for your first tour. A walk around the center and Quinta Avenida may be enough.
Use the next full day for Chichen Itza, a cenote and Valladolid if history is high on your list. Alternatively, compare Tulum and Akumal for a coastal archaeological setting and water activities. These are different full-day programs, so read the details before swapping one for the other.
Days 3–4: rest, then choose your island day
A free day is part of the vacation, not a gap that must be filled. Enjoy your accommodation, walk locally or spend time by the water without a strict schedule.
For your island day, choose according to the activity: Cozumel for a snorkeling-focused outing, Holbox for island scenery and wandering, or Isla Mujeres for a mix of boat time, snorkeling and town. Confirm the English-language format and price if asking about Cozumel. Keep some flexibility later in the week in case navigation affects the plan.
Days 5–6: follow your energy, then head into nature
Day 5 can remain free or hold an additional activity. Look at what you have already experienced: a land-based day may provide more variety after snorkeling than another similar boat itinerary.
For Day 6, compare Coba and Punta Laguna with Sian Ka’an Deluxe. The first combines archaeology, forest and adventure activities. The second centers on waterways, coastal scenery and wildlife. Choose one; these are not two stops to combine casually in a single day.
Day 7: leave space for your departure
Keep the final day easy, particularly if you are flying. Work around the confirmed airport transfer, checkout time and luggage arrangements. Avoid relying on a tight excursion return to catch a flight.
If you depart the following day, use this time for the things you most enjoyed: another local walk, a relaxed meal or time by the pool. A week feels more personal when it leaves room to repeat a favorite moment.
Adapt the itinerary to your group
With young children, reduce the number of long road trips. With confident swimmers, an additional water day may be appealing. If archaeology is your priority, compare the distinct settings of Chichen Itza, Tulum and Coba rather than assuming one ruins visit covers everything.
Your hotel changes the logistics. A “Playa del Carmen” resort may be outside the walkable center, while a pickup from Tulum or Cancun changes transfer times. Share the exact property before confirming a schedule. Whale shark trips are a seasonal alternative only from June 15 through September 15.
