To reach a Cozumel snorkeling trip from Playa del Carmen, plan three separate steps: getting to the passenger ferry, crossing to the island, and reaching your snorkeling boat’s meeting point. Choose your ferry around the tour’s check-in time. The advertised crossing time alone will not tell you whether the connection works.

This guide is for travelers staying on the mainland and taking a day trip to Cozumel. Start by checking whether your tour includes the ferry. If it does, ask for the meeting instructions before buying another ticket.

Where does the Playa del Carmen ferry arrive?

The passenger crossing connects downtown Playa del Carmen with San Miguel de Cozumel. Ultramar lists NAVEGA Maritime Terminal on Avenida Benito Juárez in Playa and San Miguel Maritime Terminal on Avenida Rafael Melgar in Cozumel. Check the operator’s route information for your sailing.

Your snorkeling meeting point is a separate detail. Ask for the pier or marina name, a map pin, and written instructions for the journey from the ferry terminal. Confirm whether someone meets you on arrival or whether you need to arrange that transfer yourself.

If you are arriving on a cruise ship, use your ship’s arrival instructions and the tour’s cruise-port arrangements instead. A mainland ferry connection does not establish a workable plan for a cruise call.

Work backward from snorkeling check-in

Before purchasing a separate ferry ticket, send the snorkeling operator the sailing you intend to use. Ask them to confirm that it leaves enough time for your particular meeting point.

  1. Tour check-in: write down when you must be present, rather than only the boat’s departure time.
  2. Island connection: allow for leaving the ferry and getting to the meeting point, including the buffer advised by the tour operator.
  3. Crossing: check the duration for your service. Xcaret Xailing currently describes a crossing of about 45 minutes on its Cozumel ferry page.
  4. Ferry boarding: add the advance-arrival requirement that applies to your ticket.
  5. Hotel departure: include the journey to the terminal, the walk from your drop-off point and any ticket-office arrangements.

Ultramar’s terms and conditions require 40 minutes for Cozumel, although its route page showed 30 minutes when checked on October 11, 2026. Plan around the more cautious, route-specific requirement and reconfirm your ticket instructions. It covers ferry boarding, not your onward connection to the snorkeling boat.

A ferry scheduled to arrive shortly before the tour starts leaves several unanswered questions. Where will you disembark? How will you reach the boat? When does check-in close? Resolve those questions rather than assuming a single buffer works for every departure.

What changes when the ferry is included?

For a combined package, ask who issues the ferry tickets, where you first meet the team and who coordinates the island transfer. Share your hotel address before accepting pickup arrangements. A hotel described as being in Playa del Carmen may still require a drive to the terminal.

If you book the ferry and snorkeling independently, you are also coordinating the connection. Get the meeting instructions and missed-departure conditions before paying. Ask whether the boat returns to the same place, whether transport back to the ferry is included and whom to contact if your crossing is delayed.

When comparing costs, include both ferry journeys, mainland transport, any island transfer, the snorkeling trip and separately charged items such as meals or access fees. Check the currency and the ticket category for each traveler. A ferry fare and a complete excursion price cover different parts of the day.

Keep the right ticket format handy

Read the boarding rules when you receive your tickets. Ultramar accepts original digital tickets on a phone, but rejects ticket screenshots, photocopies and photographs. Keep the original digital ticket available and test that you can open it before leaving your accommodation.

Protect your phone and travel documents from water during the boat trip. Bring dry clothing for the journey home, and check bag allowances with both operators if you are carrying more than a small day bag. The ferry’s luggage policy does not establish what the snorkeling boat can accommodate.

Plan the return before adding free time

Build your return around the tour’s actual finishing point. Include disembarkation, the journey back to the ferry terminal and the required boarding time before deciding how much time you have for a meal or a walk in San Miguel.

If you have a pickup waiting in Playa del Carmen, agree on the meeting location and how to report a delay. Keep the contact details with your booking. Avoid making a tight onward commitment on the assumption that every part of the day will finish at its earliest advertised time.

What if the sea conditions change?

Check messages from the ferry company and the snorkeling operator before traveling. Mexico’s SEMAR also publishes port opening and closure information. Confirm each service: an operating ferry does not, by itself, confirm that your snorkeling trip is going ahead.

Ask in advance who will contact you about changes and what rescheduling or cancellation conditions apply to each booking. If you purchased the components separately, do not assume that a change to one automatically refunds the others.

Ask VivaOhlala about your Cozumel plans

If someone would rather spend the day on land, plan that option before booking. A walk around San Miguel and one additional stop, with transport both ways confirmed, call for different arrangements from a snorkeling day. Keep the ferry return in view before adding distant stops.

For children or less-confident swimmers, ask about boarding, entering the water and supervision for anyone who stays out. The provision of a life jacket does not, on its own, establish whether the activity suits every traveler.

For a Cozumel inquiry in English, send your preferred date, hotel, party size and children’s ages, plus details of anything you have already booked. Ask the team to confirm the guide language, group arrangements, ferry inclusions and complete price for that date. Cozumel’s French-language shared tour should not be treated as a confirmed English-language offer.

You can explore VivaOhlala’s private tours in English and use the Cozumel inquiry information on that page. If you are still choosing an island, our Cozumel, Holbox and Isla Mujeres comparison helps you match the destination to the day you want.
