Your phone is often your map, camera and way to confirm a hotel pickup. Before flying to Mexico, make sure you know how it will connect, what that connection costs and what you can still access without a signal.

Start with your current US plan

Check your carrier’s Mexico coverage for your exact plan. Ask about the data allowance, speed limits after that allowance, hotspot use, calls and texts. “International coverage” does not necessarily mean unlimited high-speed data or every feature you use at home.

If the included allowance suits your trip, using your existing plan may be the simplest option. Save the terms or take a screenshot so you can check them without searching through an account page after landing.

When a local SIM or travel eSIM may help

An alternative plan can be useful when your home plan has expensive roaming or too little data. Compare the total price, validity period and amount of data. Check whether calls and SMS are included or whether it is a data-only plan.

To use another carrier, your phone must support that service and be unlocked. For an iPhone, Apple advises checking Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock; “No SIM restrictions” indicates an unlocked device. Confirm eSIM support for your exact phone and plan before buying.

Setup may require Wi-Fi. Read when the plan’s validity starts and whether activation must happen at the destination. Keep installation instructions somewhere you can access offline, and do not discard your existing SIM.

Avoid accidental roaming charges

On a phone with two active lines, choose which line supplies mobile data and check the roaming settings for each line. Keeping your home number available for calls or texts may still create charges, depending on your plan. If you are uncertain, ask your carrier before departure.

Use your phone’s data monitor during the trip. Uploading videos, cloud photo backups and hotspot sharing can use an allowance much faster than messages or basic maps.

Prepare for a day with limited service

Do not rely on continuous reception during a jungle, reserve or boat excursion. Download the map area you need and save your hotel address, booking confirmation, pickup instructions and meeting location before leaving Wi-Fi.

  • Charge your phone overnight and bring a charged power bank if needed.
  • Save your pickup time and contact details as a screenshot.
  • Agree on a meeting point before separating from your group.
  • Keep a dry pouch handy for boat and swimming days.

Use hotel Wi-Fi as a backup

Ask the property to confirm the correct network name. Hotel Wi-Fi can be useful for downloading maps and sending photos, but its availability and speed vary. Plan essential travel details in advance instead of assuming you can download everything at the departure point.

Confirm your tour details before you leave

Send your hotel name, travel date and group size when you contact VivaOhlala. Confirm the final meeting instructions while connected. You can also browse our Riviera Maya travel guides before your trip and save the information you need.
